okay, now I know what was different, in case anyone is interested...
here's the code I was using for the search in sql:
$sql="select blah, blah, where name like '" . $lname . "' AND.....
when I tried it this time I had changed it to this:
$sql ="select blah, blah, where name like '$lname' and ....
ie. the lesson learned is NOT to break up my sql string by
concatenating.
whew!
