Subject: creating an excel spreadsheet as an email attachment

I have a cgi/script that extracts data from a sybase database and returns it
to the web in a table format .
When the requested data is excessive I'd like to return it as an email
attachment pointing to an excel spreadsheet.
I know how to send email but I don't know how to specify an attachment and
how to indicate it to point to a excel to extract the file.
any pointers or suggestions where I can lookup the information would be
appreciate.
