I just found out that the sybase installation on that particular server had
been mangled. :) Crucial files were missing which caused the demise of my
attempt to manipulate with sybperl.

Sorry for the delay...

It looks to me like the locale name is possibly wrong (ie that
"default" isn't found in the locales.dat file).
