After digging deeper into this problem, this seems to be also a deficiency
on the client (server - whatever):

 - We are using (unfortunately - historical reasons) tiny integers
   with the NULL option. This maps to type = 38 and usertype = 5 in
   systypes. The name of type 38 (in systypes) is intn. A small int
   with the NULL option maps to type = 38 and usertype = 6, an int
   (with NULL) maps to type = 56, usertype = 7. So we would really
   need to get both usertype and type from ct_col_types back...
