As Ron Watkins stated, the key is to get the mime type
right at the beginning:

You're right. The "Functions" chapter of the Perl book states:
"binmode() has no effect under UNIX." i.e. only useful for
DOS/Win type OS's.
I guess that's my DOS BigPerl 4.036 roots sticking out.
Happily using Solaris now!
