Unix - gzip
        tar

gzip is part of the gnu distribution.
This is the official readme:
ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/%3DREADME-about-.gz-files

Solaris 2.X binary: http://ibc.wustl.edu:70/5/Solaris2/gzip.exe
SunOS 4.1.X source: (I am not sure where to get a compiled version)
ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/gzip-1.2.4.tar is source.
I used Netscape to find most of this stuff.
Most ftp sites will have a gzip binary for downloading.
Read the readme when you log in.

Unix Commands:

1) gzip -d perl.xxxx.tar.gz produces perl.xxx.tar
2) tar xvf perl.xxx.tar untarrs files.

You can do a man gzip or man tar.

DOS/Win
1) file://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/gnu/gzip/gzip-1.2.4.msdos.exe
2) file://ftp.njit.edu/pub/msdos/utilities/tar.exe

Good luck.
Laurence
